Where
the mighty Pyrenean mountain range finally plunges
into the mediterranean sea in a chaos of steep-sided
vineyards and rocky coves, there is a group of
little fishing villages - Collioure, Banyuls
and Port Vendre - tucked in between mountain
and sea. Collioure is the prettiest of the three
with its harbour and clock tower and narrow streets:
so attractive, in fact, that numerous painters
have settled here over the years - from the fauvists
Matisse and Derain to contemporary artists. The
climate, the light on the sea and the vines,
the fresh anchovies from the fishing port all
combine to enchant and delight the visitor.
Using
Collioure as a base one can easily reach other
'artistic' destinations: the modern art museum
at Ceret with its Picassos and Braques, the Dali
museum at Figueras, just over the border in Spain
and Dali's home village, Cadaquès, further
along the coast.
Lovers
of wine will enjoy the local red 'Collioure'
and the infamous dessert wine 'Banyuls' from
the next village. Don't miss a visit to the 'Cellier
des Templiers' wine cellars deep among the vines.
The
whole coast can be enjoyed from the sea: regular
half-day cruises enable the visitor to appreciate
the dramatic coastline from aboard a comfortable
vessel cruising a few hundred yards from the
shore.
